Happy Was the Occasion
Clarksville, Arkansas Post Office, 1939
The mural was produced as part of the US Government WPA/FAP during the depression. It still exists in the Clarksville Post Office. A funny story goes with this mural. Mary painted it from old photographs of Clarksville from around 1850. She was a "city girl" having grown up in Chicago and didn't know much about animals. The horses were painted with cloven feet. The people of Clarksville were quite displeased and Mary had to go and correct the mistake after the mural was in place.
